The Meru County Investment and Development Corporation (MCIDC) has prepared an energy map. There are 18-small hydro sites with capacities ranging from 300kilowatts to 3megawatts. The county has high potential for solar energy for being along the equator; The Nturigwi area covering 600 Acres receives a radiation of 6.2kWh/m2/daily and 2263.3kWh/m2. Annually, the estimated capacity is over 200MW.
Wind Energy potential is high due to the nature of the topography in the region. The wind speed in wind corridor areas range from 4-7m/s. The County has an estimated potential capacity of over 400MW.
The renewable energy sector in Meru County is therefore vibrant with attractive commercial opportunities for the investors in:
- Wind energy
- Solar energy
- Mini hydro energy
- Waste to energy
MCIDC together with its partners is developing 200MW OF Solar, Wind and battery at Meru County Energy Park. MCIDC is also supporting many other investors in the 4 renewable energy areas.
